1/2 Day Trips

SUMMER

"El Gato Dos" offers summer half days trips to the world famous La Jolla and Point Loma Kelp beds. White sea bass, calico bass, sand bass, barracuda, bonito and yellowtail are the targeted species. We fish with live bait and light tackle for our quarry.

The weather is exceptionally calm during the summer months and ideal for groups with a limited amount of fishing time. We usually start fishing within 45 minutes of the harbor entrance. While fishing at anchor we frequently will see schools of fish charging up the chum line chasing anchovies and sardines. Seeing a school of bass or yellowtail airborne behind the boat is impressive to say the least.

You will be using medium action bait rods with Shimano Speedmaster and TLD reels with 25 pound test line. This past summer we had a rare opportunity to put anglers on Dorado, or Mahi Mahi within 5 miles of the harbor!

 

 

WINTER

During the winter months we search the offshore reefs for the highly desired rockfish. Light tackle is again utilized with the preferred bait being squid. We have spent the last 18 years developing a computer data base of fishing spots with the intent being to maximize fishing time and decrease driving time. We carefully plan every trip before we leave the dock, targeting reefs in a specific order.

You will be using a medium action bottom rod with Jigmaster 500 reels and ultra sensitive braided fishing line. Ling cod, vermilion rockfish, california sheephead and whitefish are just a few of the abundant species of fish residing on the reefs. Our goal is to seek out those areas infrequently fished by other boats.

 

 

Winter Squid


When they make their appearence duing the winter months off San Diego the El Gato Dos hunts for the giant squid on 1/2 day evening trips. Usually only having to go about 10 miles offshore to find the hard fighting cephalopods. Tackle consists of larger 4/0 reels and braided lines. Not for the faint at heart, the squid can be found in depths of 100-1000 feet.

Your crew will expertly fillet your catch and
package your fish for freezing. We have facilities
at the landing to keep your catch until you return home.

The price of a half day trip is $750.

This includes, tackle, beverages, licenses, chips, bait and fillet service. The trip is approximately 5 1/2 hours long, contingent on where the fish are lurking. (Crew gratuity is not included and greatly appreciated!)
