September 12th 2009 Make A Wish Tuna Challenge fishing

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Left Mission Bay at 12 midnight with some excellent sardines heading southwest. We were met with bumpy conditions and the weather conditions declined all day long. With my plan in play we made it 45 miles before the sun came up. We were able to work down swell to the east all day, pretty much the only way it was comfortable to fish. We found good fishing and ended with 20 Yellowfin, 7 Dorado, a Yellowtail and a few skipjack. We released the jacks and more Yellowfin. We also got a rare look at a CUVIER’S BEAKED WHALE, I have only seen one before in all my years on the ocean. We got pretty close to this one. We weighed some fish for the tournament, not catching the big Albacore I had hoped for, but we still have a chance. Will post results later today.

September 10th and 11th, Tuna, Dorado and Yellows

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

Had back to back offshore trips. Thursday the weather was bad, we did not fish a live bait all day. Managed 8 Yellowfin trolling, and a few skipjack. Friday the weather was better and a fellow captain turned us on to a nice kelp. We fished that kelp all day, for 18 Yellowfin, some skipjack, and yellowtail. Awsome fishing. The yellowfin were 10 feet from the boat eating anchovies one after another. Very cool to see. Tonight we leave on an overnight for the Make A Wish tuna challenge. Wish us luck!!!

Another fantastic day on the water on the El Gato. First fish around 8:30am, done by 11:30am with limits for 4 guys. Also had 4 Dorado and a Mexican Skipjack. Which is different than the usual Skipjack we catch in this area. These fish more commonly seen farther down the Baja coast.

September 4th and 5th 2009 Lots of Yellowfin.

Sorry for the late report. Too many fish to cut and needed all the rest we could get. Lots of tuna out there right now. Also mixed in Yellowtail and Dorado.

Friday we had 12 Yellowfin some Dorado, Yellows and Skipjack. It was a slow start, then we found a good kelp and a nice spot of porpoise. Ended with a bang!

Saturday we went the distance and it paid off big time. One kelp, one drift, over 30 fish! Mostly Yellowfin with a few skippies. It was what dreams are made of!

After a slow start, it’s game on right now. Time to lie to the wife, and boss. Sell the kids, take a boat, take a train, take a car… and go fishing on the El Gato Dos. Yesterday we had 3 guys catch over 40 fish. Yellowtail, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado and Skipjack. We kept some and released a lot of Yellows. The weather is great, the fish are biting. So do what Randy, Bob and Les did and come fishing.
