September 25th, 2009 Fog, then found’em Yellowfin, Yellowtail and Skipjack

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

Started with a heap of thick fog this morning from the dock to 15 miles out. Richard and his group came aboard with high hopes and the right attitude. It’s always good to have a group that’s there to enjoy themselves and sees catching fish a bonus, no one should ever charter a boat to put meals on the table, they should go for the experience, time away from the hussle of daily life.
And when the group has the right attitude, the crew feels that and orders up some good fishing, and good fishing we had, not good, excellent!!! First thing in the morning we have a kelp for 13 fish! Yellowfin and Yellowtail. Ok, day made, let’s find some more. Jig strikes and bird schools gave us a total of 36 fish for the day. 23 Yellowfin, 8 Yellowtail, 5 Skipjack. It was an epic day to say the least. Congrats to Karen on her first Yellowfin tuna.

Fish are still here guys, let’s go fishing!!!

September 22, 2009 BIG Albacore!!!!

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Took Greg and his family out fishing again yesterday. Rough weather all day, some old timers call that sort of weather “Albacore Weather” and now I know what they mean. We had a triple jig strike and 2 baitfish at 11am. All 5 were over 30 pounds. The hand held scale said #35. The El Gato has some built in magic that raises fish like no other boat I have been on. I have read about certain fiberglass boats with diesel engines that have “that” sound, and she has it. We also caught 5 nice Yellowfin tuna and lost a couple more. Now these Albacore could be the sign of a very exciting fall fishing season, or it could just be a random catch. Either way, we gotem, we got 5 and we are freakin stoked!!!! img_0943img_0949

Skunk. Went west, saw a lot of fish, Skipjack, Yellowfin and Marlin, none of which would bite. Crappy feeling, but what can ya do? Talked to other fisherman in that area and they had the same luck, or lack there of.

Did an afternoon offshore half day. Found some fish on porpoise that would not bite. Did manage a Yellowfin and a Skipjack pretty darn close to LaJolla.

September 16th 2009, Yellowfin, Yellowtail, Dorado and Skipjack kinda day

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Took Bob and his band of Beachcombers out on a 5-5 yesterday. had two good kelps for 9 Yellows, and a Dorado. Had a few skippie jig striked throughout the day, but not much else to be found….Until! Close to home we found the porpoise school to die for. A ton of tern bird and fish, lots of fish. Hit it for an hour and got 10 nice Yellowfin, nothing under 20 pounds. Ended up getting in late, but winter is what resting is for. We are out later today to try to find em again.

September 14th 2009 More Yellowfin

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Fished with a group we take out on a regular basis, Greg, Tony and a few of their friends. Met with great weather as we left Mission Bay today. Turned the pointy end of the Gato offshore and ran for about 28 miles. Found a pod of Porpoise and got 4 off it before hearing that another boat in our group was on a good kelp. We ran 30 min. to their location but the party was pretty much over. I think we got 2 fish off it before heading our own way. Headed SE and found a spot of tern bird on Yellowfin. Got 7 there, having 3 one at once. More show than go in regards to the fish, but we were thankful for what we got. Headed in and found green water 15 miles out. Not a good sign.. Boo Hoo, seasons are changin. Till next time.
