Had another day of bad weather today. 3-5′ Mixed swell made for tough fishing. Did manage a few Red Rockfish and a nice Ling Cod. This trip was the start of filming for a promo video for El Gato Sportfishing that we will have one the homepage of our website here in a few months. We want to get some Tuna and Yellowtail fishing footage, and some of the Coranado Islands. Saturday we are doing an exploritory Thresher Shark fishing trip. Stay tuned for the results! Till then, Capt. Bryan

Had a AM 1/2 day and once again were greeted by bad weather at daybreak. Fished La Jolla out in 20 fathoms or so for a nice mix of Vermillion rockfish and Chuckleheads. Only problem was with 4-6′ seas and 15 knots of wind it was hard to get the anchor to stick on the spot. With over 200′ of scope out, the anchor would not stay in one spot. We decided to try fishing in shallow along the kelp line where the weather was nicer and the bass were on the chew. In an hour our 4 anglers had 4 nice keeper bass and over a dozen shorts ones. It was good action and a great change from the winter rockfish. A buddy of mine, David Crane fishing on his 21′ Parker landed a #100 Thresher shark today, his first, Congrats Dave! Now where are my steaks?
We will be out again Wednesday. Tight lines, Capt. Bryan

No trips this weekend, but it’s not from the lack of nice weather. Highs near 80s and light winds should really get the fishing back on track. We are booking a few trips for the summer months already so it’s a good time to get a deposit down and have your choice of dates. Tommorrow, Sunday the 19th is the 30th annual Day at the Docks in Pt. Loma. It’s free and a great way to spend a Sunday. Here is a link to the site, http://www.sportfishing.org/DAD00/dad2009.html

April 14th 2009 Calm before the storm

Had a last minute AM 1/2 day trip today. Forcast was for a small craft advisory with 25knots of wind for the afternoon. The morning started out fairly nice with a good size mixed swell and some wind. It increased all morning and was rough by the time we headed in, to the point where there no boats fished the afternoon. Fishing wise they wanted to bite today! We had about 20 mixed fish for the 3 guys that were fishing in the group. (2) 25″ Lingcod, some Reds, Treefish, a few Johnny Bass and a nice Salmon Grouper. Released many short lings as well. It was one of those one anchor job days which are always nice to have. The guys went home with all the fish they wanted and we were able to take some as well that went into some exceptional fish tacos!

Last Tuesday we spotted schools of Yellowtail very close to the inlet. The fish were up on speedbait, but did not want to bite sardines or the surface iron. This is a good sign, and once this batch of fish settles in we should have some great fishing!
